After Katrina, musically rich Treme is shrinking

“The neighborhood that produced Louis Armstrong, Trombone Shorty and Uncle Lionel Batiste among others is shrinking. The Laffite housing complex , part of Treme, is gone, one of the four brick housing complexes that survived the storm, but were inexplicabily demolished after Katrina, giving their residents no place to come home to live in New Orleans.”

“David Simon, the genius behind the HBO series “The Wire”, is now shooting a new HBO series called “Treme” about life among musicians struggling to put their post-Katrina lives back together. HBO says it expects the series to start in fall 2010. The show has added to the influx of actors , writers, photographers and technical crews now calling New Orleans home, while shooting the many movies and shows in the Big Easy. These newcomers to the city can often be found listening to the musicians in the city with knowledge of the performers often exceeding that of a longtime local.”
